Gauge Reference
The gauge is the thickness of the jewelry (Usually the thickness of the wire the jewelry is made from but may also be the diameter of a plug or eyelet).  From 20 gauge to 00 gauge, the smaller the number is, the thicker the jewelry is. After 00 gauge, the diameter of body jewelry is usually measured in fractional inches as shown below; however, some manufacturers make 000 gauge and 0000 gauge jewelry.

Millimeters are rounded to the first decimal.
Gauge       Inches
20g = 0.8mm   3/32" = 2.4mm   1" = 25.4mm
18g = 1mm   1/8" = 3.2mm   1-1/16" = 27mm
16g = 1.3mm   5/32" = 4mm   1-1/8" = 28.6mm
14g = 1.6mm   3/16" = 4.8mm   1-3/16" = 30.2mm
12g = 2mm   7/32" = 5.6mm   1-1/4" = 31.8mm
10g = 2.6mm   1/4" = 6.4mm   1-5/16" = 33.3mm
8g = 3.3mm   5/16" = 7.9mm   1-3/8" = 34.9mm
6g = 4mm   3/8" = 9.5mm   1-7/16" = 36.5mm
4g = 5mm   7/16" = 11.1mm   1-1/2" = 38.1mm
2g = 6.5mm   1/2" = 12.7mm   1-9/16" = 39.7mm
0g = 8.2mm   9/16" = 14.3mm   1-5/8" = 41.3mm
00g = 9.5mm   5/8" = 15.9mm   1-11/16" = 42.9mm
000g = 10.5mm   11/16" = 17.5mm   1-3/4" = 44.5mm
0000g = 11.7mm   3/4" = 19.1mm   1-13/16" = 46mm
    13/16" = 20.6mm   1-7/8" = 47.6mm
    7/8" = 22.2mm   1-15/16" = 49.2mm
    15/16" = 23.8mm   2" = 50.8mm
Captive Bead Ring Diameter
The diameter of all types of rings is the inside diameter of the ring.  The gauge is the thickness of the wire.
Straight Barbell Length
Straight barbell length is the linear length of the bar between the balls.  The gauge is the thickness of the wire.
Curved Barbell Length
Curved barbells or banana bells, are measured in a straight line between where the lip of each ball meets the bar on the inside of the curve.  Measure the distance between the top and bottom holes of your piercing to determine the length you need.  The gauge is the thickness of the wire.
Circular Barbell Diameter
Circular barbells are measured across the inside diameter of the barbell similar to captive bead rings.  The gauge is the thickness of the wire.
Doorknocker & Jackhammer Size
Like straight barbells, doorknockers and jackhammers are sized according to the linear length of the bar between the two balls.  The gauge is the thickness of the wire.
Labret Length
Labrets are measured from the disk to the ball along the length of the bar.  The gauge is the thickness of the wire.
Plug Wearable Area
The wearable area of a plug is the distance between flares or flare and O-ring.  The gauge is the diameter of the plug.
Eyelet Wearable Area
The wearable area of eyelets and flesh tunnels is the distance between the flares or flare and the o-ring.  The gauge is the diameter.
Septum Spike Wearable Area
Septum spike wearable area is the length of the bar between the spikes. The gauge is the thickness of the wire.
Pincher Diameter
The diameter of pinchers is measured as the inside diameter.  The gauge is the thickness of the pincher at the thickest point (top).
Helix or Spiral Diameter
The diameter of helix or spiral barbells is measured as the inside diameter.  The gauge is the thickness of the wire.
