Body Jewelry Tools
by John Coffman
SteelNavel.com
As your collection of captive bead rings
grows, so may your frustration with inserting and removing
them--especially with large gauge rings that may require a visit to your piercer.
The same tools your piercer uses are available for home use. There are
three body jewelry tools made specifically for captive bead rings. Ring opening pliers,
ring closing pliers and bead holding tweezers.
Ring Opening Pliers
These pliers work like regular pliers but in reverse--when you squeeze the
handles the jaws open. The narrow jaws have grooves for various size
rings. You should always protect your jewelry from scratching with some
tape, band-aids or a soft cloth between the pliers and the jewelry.
To remove a bead, simply place the jaws inside the ring and gently press
the handles while holding the bead with your other hand. Open the ring
just enough to remove the bead. When done correctly the ring will spring
back into shape and you won't need ring closing pliers.
Large gauge rings can only be opened with pliers, so if you change your
jewelry frequently you
can avoid unnecessary trips to your piercer by having your own pliers.
Ring opening pliers are available in four sizes.
Ring Closing Pliers
Captive bead rings get their name from the fact that the spring tension of
the ring ends holds the
bead captive. The problem is that you often need to pull the ring ends
apart to insert the jewelry
in your piercing. Since the gap will then be too big to hold the bead
captive, you will need to "close"
the ring so the gap is again slightly smaller than the diameter of the
bead.
If you do this with your hands
you risk misshaping the ring.
Ring closing pliers have curved jaws that
will close the gap while keeping the ring
shape. They are available in two sizes for small and large rings. As with
ring opening pliers be sure to
protect your jewelry from scratching with tape, band-aids or a soft cloth.
Bead Holding Tweezers
These can be handy when inserting captive bead rings in hard to reach
places or when you have big
fingers like mine! Simply place the bead in the tweezers and squeeze. The
tweezers will act as an
extension of your fingers and keep them from blocking your view when
aligning the bead dimples with the ring ends.
For further information on changing your captive
bead ring, please see our
captive bead ring FAQ.

Piercing The Web
Body Art News from the Web
by John Coffman
SteelNavel.com
|
|
In
May, PBS aired a program called
Skin Stories: The Art and Culture of Polynesian Tattoo. Skin Stories
explores the transformative power of an art inscribed on the body as a
way to honor the past, to explore one's inner self, and to preserve a
culture for the future.
The
Skin Stories web site has a wealth of information on both the history
and role of tattoos. Did you know the armband tattoo, the most
predominant style of tattooing, was originally developed as a "souvenir"
for American Peace Corps workers returning to the United States?
According to the Sacramento
Bee,
piercing is now in the Oxford Dictionary of English along with
bootylicious and cyberslacker (this might be you right now!)
According to
Clinton Sanders, a University of Connecticut sociologist who studies
trends in popular culture, navel piercing has become a fashion statement
that crosses socio-economic lines.
